Polk County Jail Mugshots
The official Polk County inmate detail page displays a booking photo when a public profile is opened and a photo is available. The sample public profile inspected in the research had an image labeled Inmate Photo and a photo endpoint tied to the booking number. That means the photo is part of a jail inmate detail record. It is not a separate commercial mugshot site, and no separate official Polk County sheriff mugshot gallery was verified.
Polk County Jail is operated by the Polk County Sheriff's Office under Sheriff Kevin J. Schneider. The adult jail roster and booking lists are published through the Polk County Inmates portal, which routes users to current inmates, previous 24-hour bookings, prior-date bookings, releases, and a released-inmate search. Federal-charge inmates are not listed in the county portal, so absence from the roster does not prove the person is not in custody.
Polk County jail mugshots are most likely to appear when the person is in active sheriff custody or is linked from a booking or release list that still opens a detail record. The research did not verify that every released record in the 365-day released-inmate search keeps a photo visible. For older records, missing images, or records that have aged off the public portal, the Sheriff's Office records request process is the official fallback.
Where Polk Booking Photos Appear
The public tables do not show every field at once. Current inmate and booking tables show a View link, name, age, book date, and sometimes status. The View link opens the detail-style page where the mugshot may appear with demographics, booking data, bail, court case information, and charge lines. For a fuller custody search, the companion Polk County jail inmate records page explains the roster fields and access channels in more detail.
| Channel | Photo Finding | Use It For |
|---|---|---|
| Current inmate detail | Mugshot or inmate photo was shown on the sample public detail page. | Current adult sheriff custody, except federal-charge inmates not listed by the portal. |
| Booking-list detail | View links open detail-style pages, where a photo endpoint may appear while the record is available. | People booked in the previous 24 hours or on a prior date. |
| Released-inmate detail | Released lists can still link to details, but photo retention for all released records was not fully verified. | Recent releases and released-inmate searches for the previous 365 days. |
| Sheriff mugshot gallery | No separate official Polk County mugshot gallery was located. | Do not rely on a gallery search. |
| Federal mugshots | BOP and USMS generally do not publish public mugshot galleries. | Use federal locators for custody, not photos. |
Use the official jail and arrest landing page at Polk County jail and arrest information when choosing between current inmates, booking lists, releases, and released search. Use the roster detail, not a copied third-party image, when the goal is to confirm the source of a booking photo.
Request Polk County Booking Photos
Polk County booking photos can be found online when the public detail record displays the inmate photo. If the image is not online, the person has been released, or the record is older than the public list, use the Polk County Sheriff's Office records request page. The same records page covers booking, arrest, incident, dispatch, audio, video, photo, and other law-enforcement records that are not available in the inmate portal.
- Start at the Polk County Inmates portal and check Current Inmates for a person believed to be in sheriff custody.
- For a recent arrest, check Bookings Previous 24 Hours and Bookings Prior Date, then open the View link.
- On the detail page, look for the Inmate Photo field or image above the demographics and booking information.
- If the photo is missing or the record is no longer online, file a sheriff records request for the specific booking photo.
- Include the person's name, known booking date, booking number, case number, or arrest agency if available.
- Use the jail phone, (515) 323-5400, when recent transfer or federal-charge exclusion makes the online data unclear.
The records contact named in the research is Jerry Noble at the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 5995 NE 14th Street, Des Moines, IA 50313. The records request phone is (515) 286-3313, and the records office hours documented in the research are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Official request channels include the online public-records portal, mail, in-person, and phone contact.
| Photo Request Item | Amount or Limit |
|---|---|
| Photos | $35.00 |
| Requests exceeding one hour | Additional $35.00 per hour may be charged. |
| More than 10 pages | Additional $0.25 per page may be added. |
Polk County Photo Record Fields
A Polk County mugshot is shown in context with a booking record. The sample detail page inspected on June 13, 2026, was a live public record, so personal details should not be reused as page copy. The useful part is the field inventory. It shows what a user can expect to verify next to the photo when a public profile is available.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Mugshot or inmate photo | One front-facing booking image from an endpoint tied to the booking number. |
| IowaVINE link | Registration link for custody or release updates for that inmate. |
| Name and inmate number | Name in last, first, middle format and a person-level jail identifier. |
| Demographics | Age, hair color, eye color, race, sex, height, and weight fields. |
| Holding location | Public location abbreviation, with PCJ observed for Polk County Jail. |
| Booking data | Booking number, booking date, case heading, case number, and case date. |
| Bail and charges | Bail amount, bail type, arrest agency, charge count, and charge details. |
The booking photo does not prove guilt. Polk County's portal warns that jail arrest records are not proof or indicators of guilt, and case disposition must be checked through Iowa Courts Online. For formal charges, amendments, dismissals, and expungement routes, use Polk County court records after a jail arrest.
Are Polk Jail Mugshots Public?
Iowa law starts from open records, but access is not unlimited. Iowa Code chapter 22 is the state open records law. Iowa Code section 22.7 lists confidential-record exceptions, including peace officers' investigative reports and other protected data. A photo that is visible on the public jail detail page is public in that context, but the Sheriff's Office can withhold confidential information when processing a records request.
Iowa Code section 692.1 defines arrest data to include information such as charge, date, time, place, and outstanding or unserved arrest warrants. Iowa Code section 692.3 allows redissemination of arrest data and allows a criminal or juvenile justice agency to redisseminate a wanted person's name, photograph, physical description, and identifying information when a warrant has issued. That statute does not create a promise that every booking photo will remain online after release or dismissal.
Iowa records callout: Public access to arrest data and booking photos is shaped by Iowa Code chapters 22 and 692, plus confidentiality limits for investigations, juveniles, victims, and protected personal data.
What is and isn't public: A visible roster photo can be viewed as part of the public inmate detail. Missing, sealed, juvenile, investigative, medical, victim-related, or otherwise confidential material may require denial, redaction, or court review.
Mugshot Removal and Expungement
No official Polk County page located in the research states a blanket rule for releasing every booking photo after release, dismissal, or expungement. That is an important limit. A booking photo that appears while a person is on the roster may not stay available in the same way after the record moves to a release list or after public portal retention ends. The released-inmate search covers the previous 365 days, but the research did not verify universal photo display for every released record.
For a dismissed, acquitted, sealed, or expunged case, the records-clearing path runs through court records first. Iowa Code chapter 901C governs expungement of criminal records. Section 901C.2 covers expungement after not-guilty verdicts or dismissals, section 901C.3 covers certain misdemeanor expungements, and section 907.9 covers discharge after deferred judgment. Juvenile record sealing is addressed by Iowa Code section 232.150.
Once the court record is sealed or expunged, contact the originating agency or records unit about the specific booking photo. Do not use commercial mugshot publishing or pay-to-remove sites as an official route. They were excluded from the research and are not Polk County, the Sheriff's Office, Iowa Courts, or the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
Federal and State Photos
Polk County jail mugshots are county booking photos. They do not cover sentenced state prisoners, federal prison inmates, federal pretrial detainees, or immigration detainees in a reliable way. Polk County's own portal says inmates with federal charges are not listed. If a person is missing from the county roster, check the custody channel that matches the case status.
| Custody Type | Lookup Channel | Photo Rule |
|---|---|---|
| County jail | Polk County Inmates portal and jail phone. | Booking photo may appear on the public detail page. |
| State prison or DOC custody | Iowa DOC Offender Search. | DOC records can include offender information, but this is not a Polk jail mugshot search. |
| Federal prison | BOP Inmate Locator. | No public federal mugshot gallery is promised. |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator and facility phone. | Use custody locators, not mugshot galleries. |
Polk County also has the official Polk County Sheriff's IA app in the Apple App Store and Google Play. The research found public safety news, tips, and communication features, but no confirmed app-only inmate roster or warrant search. Treat the official web portal and records request process as the primary photo channels.
